Junagarh Fort
Discover Junagarh Fort:
Sprawling across the flat desert plains of Bikaner, Junagarh Fort is an absolute architectural masterpiece that breaks all the rules of traditional Rajasthani fortresses. While most historic forts in India were built high up on rugged hilltops for safety, Junagarh stands proudly on the ground—and incredibly, it was never captured in its long history.
Built in the late 16th century by Raja Rai Singh, this massive citadel transitions from rugged, formidable red sandstone on the outside to some of the most breathtakingly opulent, gold-leafed palace interiors you will ever see in India.
A Golden Treasure Hidden in Plain Sight
Unlike empty stone ruins, stepping past the heavy iron-spiked gates of Junagarh Fort feels like walking into a royal treasury. The contrast is mind-blowing: the exterior is a defensive powerhouse with 37 massive bastions, but inside lies a labyrinth of courtyard palaces decorated with exquisite Italian tiles, delicate mirrors, and literal layers of pure gold leaf painting.
Top Things to See & Do Inside:
Anup Mahal (The Golden Throne Room): This is the crown jewel of the fort. It features jaw-dropping red and gold lacquerwork, intricate mirrors, and stained glass windows where Bikaner’s kings were coronated.
Badal Mahal (The Palace of Clouds): Since rain is a rare blessing in the Thar Desert, the royals built a room painted entirely with beautiful blue clouds and artificial rain simulators to evoke monsoon vibes.
The Royal Weaponry Museum: History buffs will love this collection, which features ancient medieval armor, jewel-encrusted swords, and even a real, intact World War I DH-9 De Havilland biplane gifted to Maharaja Ganga Singh.
Phool Mahal (Flower Palace): The oldest part of the palace complex, covered in gorgeous flower motifs and fine mirror-work that shimmers in the natural light.
Traveler Tip & Entry Info:
Timings & Best Time to Visit: The fort is open from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Plan your visit between October and March to completely avoid the intense summer heat of Bikaner.
Audio Guides & Tickets: Unlike Jaisalmer, you do need an entry ticket here. It is highly recommended to opt for the official audio guide or hire a local licensed guide at the gate to truly appreciate the incredible stories hidden behind the palace walls.
