Mandore Gardens

Long before the massive foundation of Mehrangarh Fort was laid on its high cliff, the official seat of power for the Marwar region lived in the ancient town of Mandore. Located 9 kilometers north of the modern city, Mandore Garden Click to open side panel for more information is a vast, atmospheric public park that houses some of the most unique and grand royal monuments in western India.

Devels:  Architecture That Rewrites the Rules Unlike the typical umbrella-shaped cenotaphs found throughout Rajasthan, the royal monuments (devals) at Mandore look like miniature, multi-storey Hindu temples. Built entirely out of dark red sandstone, these structures feature towering spires, grand pillared halls, and deeply detailed carvings depicting scenes from ancient scriptures.

Highlights Within the Park:

The Deval of Maharaja Ajit Singh:
The largest and most complex monument in the park, featuring massive stone pillars and dramatic stone tiering.

The Hall of Heroes:
A long rock-cut gallery containing sixteen massive, life-sized statues of local folk heroes and deities carved directly out of a single mountain wall and painted in brilliant, vivid colors.

The Langur Troops:
The historic stone ruins are highly popular with large, playful troops of wild grey langurs who are very accustomed to visitors.
