Appearing like a dreamscape right in the middle of the calm waters of Man Sagar Lake, Jal Mahal Click to open side panel for more information (The Water Palace) is easily one of the most photographed and mysterious monuments in India.
Built out of glowing pink sandstone by Maharaja Madho Singh in the 1750s, this architectural jewel was originally designed as a breezy summer lodge for royal duck-hunting parties.
The Illusion on the Water
What makes Jal Mahal so completely fascinating is its structural illusion. From the lakeside promenade, the palace appears to be a simple, single-storey building floating on the water.
However, the structure actually climbs an incredible five storeys high! The bottom four storeys are completely submerged beneath the lake water, with only the elegant top floor exposed to the open air.
The Ultimate Visiting Routine:
Lakeside Strolls:
While entry inside the actual palace is currently restricted to preserve the structure, walking along the paved lakefront during sunset is magical.
The Night View:
If you visit after dark, the entire sandstone palace is beautifully illuminated, reflecting a warm, golden shimmer across the dark lake.
