Gadisar Lake:
The Historic Desert Oasis That Saved a KingdomIt’s hard to imagine a peaceful, shimmering water oasis right in the middle of a dry desert town, but Gadisar Lake is exactly that.
Built in the 14th century by Maharwal Gadsi Singh, this historic rainwater reservoir was actually the only source of water for the entire golden city for centuries.
Today, it has evolved into one of the most scenic and relaxing hangouts in Jaisalmer.
Architectural Wonders on WaterAs you approach the lake, you'll pass under the magnificent Tilon-ki-Pol, a grand, carved sandstone archway that frames the water beautifully.
The lake is completely surrounded by artistic shrines, historic temples, and stone ghats (steps leading down to the water).
Little domed pavilions or chhatris sit gracefully right out in the middle of the water, making the entire landscape look like a classic Indian painting.
Why You Can't Miss It:
Boating at Sunset:
You can easily rent a simple pedal boat or a rowboat to cruise around the pavilions. Doing this during sunset is pure magic as the sky shifts into shades of purple and orange.
The Evening Vibe:
If you visit after dark, the temples and ghats are beautifully lit up, and the reflection on the calm water is incredibly peaceful.
Migratory Birds:
If you happen to visit during the winter months, keep your eyes peeled for rare migratory birds that stop by the lake to escape the northern cold.
